The claim

Our conclusion

10,000 euros for newborns of refugees?

This rumor sparked a heated discussion among the population and caused waves of opinions to rise.

But is this claim actually true?

Fact check: This is a hoax. The alleged special payment of 10,000 euros for newborns of refugee parents was denied by the Federal Ministry of Finance. Such a payment is “not provided for in German law,” a ministry spokesman told the DPA. ( Source ). In fact, from January 1, 2023, child benefit will be a uniform amount of 250 euros per month for each child, regardless of the parents’ origins. Note: The entitlement for refugees is based on Section 62 of the Income Tax Act (EStG). The amount of child benefit is regulated in Section 66 EStG.

Interestingly, the discussion about a one-off payment of 10,000 euros for newborns was a political discourse, but it was about all newborns in Germany, not specifically about children of refugee parents. In April 2023, CDU General Secretary Mario Czaja suggested that the state could give every newborn 10,000 euros as start-up capital for studying or starting a business from the age of 18. ( Source )

The origin of this false report is a TikTok video from an account that has already attracted attention in the past for false reports and xenophobic content. Despite the label “ satire ” or “ satirist ,” many viewers take the alleged “facts” seriously and spread them further.

Conclusion

The claim that every newborn child of refugee parents in Germany will receive a one-off payment of 10,000 euros from September 2023 is false. This information was officially denied by the Federal Ministry of Finance. Regardless, the idea of a one-off payment of 10,000 euros for all newborns in Germany is currently only a political proposal and has not yet been enshrined in law. Especially when it comes to sensitive topics such as refugee policy, it is important to check sources and distinguish facts from false reports.
