A photo of a giant rhododendron and the lady who planted it 100 years ago is currently being shared again. We already reported on this in January of this year.

It's about this impressive photo:

The fact check

The plant in the photo is actually a rhododendron. However, it remains unclear who the woman is, where exactly the photo was taken and how old they both really are.

The claim can be found in various corners of the internet, but when the story originated is unclear. The oldest finds we know of are a few months old or come from 2020.

However, a rhododendron can actually live over 100 years. There is living proof of this in various parts of the world, such as the Canadian town of Ladysmith .

According to Gartenjournal.net, the plant can be found in fossils from the Tertiary period onwards and is therefore a very old plant species that originally comes from the Himalayas. There are 1150 species worldwide. 10 of them are native to Germany.

Could the lady actually have planted the rhododendron?

In the video we see a rhododendron that is around 100 - 115 years old. However, the plant in the photo requested appears to be a lot larger. Of course, it is within the realm of possibility that a young woman would use the plant and both of them would live to be 100 years old.

However, we tend to assume - if the family even planted the rhododendron themselves - that the plant in the photo could be significantly older than the lovely lady next to it.

Conclusion

To this day we have not been able to find out whether this woman standing next to the rhododendron actually planned this. Canadian town of Ladysmith is known to be over 100 years old. So who knows if the rhododendron we see in the picture is that old.

Actually, most great white shark stories start something like this: menacing music that slowly but steadily gets louder and more booming. A still surface of water that begins to ripple until a small white tip emerges from it.
