If you spend 15 minutes less on the social web every day, i.e. on social media, you will strengthen your immune system and prevent depression and loneliness.
In addition, the quality of sleep is improved, as shown by a study by Phil Reed from the School of Psychology at Swansea University. “This shows that people can improve their lives in many ways and have benefits to their physical health and mental wellbeing when they limit their use of social media.”
15 minutes less per day on the social web: sick less often, fewer warts
33 female and 17 male study participants between the ages of 20 and 25 answered monthly questions about their health and psychological function and reported weekly on their use of social media. The group that was asked to reduce this usage saw an average improvement in immune function of 15 percent. They suffered less from colds and warts. In addition, their sleep quality improved by 50 percent and depressive symptoms decreased by 30 percent. There were no changes in the comparison group.
However, according to Reed, it remains to be determined whether there is a direct relationship between social media use and health factors, or whether changes in well-being variables such as depression or other factors, such as an increase in physical activity, have an additional influence.
Social media platforms are designed to be addictive and cause anxiety, depression and even physical discomfort.
The American Psychological Association showed that teenagers and young adults who reduced their social media use by 50 percent for a few weeks lost weight faster and were fitter.
