A lost letter as a focal point

Imagine losing an important letter at the bus stop and before you know it, it's being shared and discussed hundreds of times. That's exactly what a 42-year-old Ukrainian woman experienced. Your December 2022 approval notice for citizens' money became a topic of conversation, in a faded state, with numbers that left many people breathless. But what is really behind it?

1849.52 euros per month for all necessary living expenses

The breakdown of the citizen's allowance : Only at second glance do you realize that the impressive sum of 1,849.52 euros per month covers all the necessary living costs for a family of three . And yes, this can be shocking for some at first glance. But this amount includes not only the standard requirements , but also rent, electricity and other costs .

According to the federal government , Ukrainian refugees have been able to receive basic security benefits since June 1, 2022. Accordingly, they have been entitled to citizen's benefit since the beginning of 2023. The citizen's allowance system is designed to ensure basic services. It's not a luxurious life, it's a survival. And in a country known for its high quality of life, the minimum is often more than in other areas.

The mystery of child benefit

There is also the question of child benefit. While citizen's benefit ensures basic supplies, the question arises as to whether child benefit is paid additionally. This is where the family fund comes into play. The answer is simple: The job center steps in until the child benefit is actually paid out by the family fund. After that, the citizen's allowance will be reduced accordingly.

Citizens' money and refugees - a comparison

Another interesting detail: not all refugees are treated equally. Ukrainian refugees have the advantage of being directly accepted into social assistance. In comparison, other refugees only receive “pocket money” and have to go through a more complicated process. This not only leads to resentment among the refugees.
