C/2014 UN271, also called Bernardinelli amber, was discovered in 2014 as a small point of light, as the name suggests, but was only identified : it is probably the largest comet ever observed with modern telescopes – and it is on its way to our solar system.
For some unknown reason, this is now being dug up again and plastered with sensational headlines:
This comet is supposedly hurtling toward Earth, but it won't even come close to being dangerous to us in 2031!

The headlines

Articles appeared in Germany and the Netherlands on April 13th claiming that C/2014 UN271 was hurtling toward Earth:

Scary headlines
Scary headlines, sources: Tag24 , DeTelegraaf

Huge comet hurtles toward Earth ” reads one headline, but only the first three words are true.

Where is the comet really going?

As described above, C/2014 UN271 was discovered in 2014 and identified in 2021. So claims that NASA has “ now ” identified the celestial body are false.
In addition, the German headline is pure clickbait, i.e. a sensationalist claim that is repeated at the beginning of the article itself, but is only put into perspective at the end of the article and belies its own headline. But we all know that people prefer to remember the headlines, but rarely read an article in its entirety.

Are you still there? Good. Then let's see where exactly C/2014 UN271, whose core an effective diameter of 119 ± 15 km, is going. Our solar system is large. Very large. You might think that the distance to the nearest supermarket is long, but that's nothing compared to the distances in our solar system!

to the Sun in 2031 is given as 10.9 AU, or 10.9 astronomical units. That's the equivalent 1,630,618,200 kilometers . So around 1.6 billion kilometers.

This is how far the comet will be from the sun, source: ExtraConversion

The distance from Sun to Earth is around 150 million kilometers.
The distance from the sun to the comet will be around 1.6 billion kilometers.
The distance from Sun to Saturn is around 1.4 billion kilometers.

Bernardinelli-Bernstein will penetrate our solar system, but will only come as “close” to the sun as the 6th planet of our solar system, while the Earth, as the 3rd planet, will not even be able to enjoy the comet from the sun can be seen with amateur telescopes.

But this will still be very interesting, as it offers astronomers the unique opportunity to be able to examine Oort cloud Astro-Tim explains this very clearly in one of his videos :

Conclusion

So it's true that a huge comet is hurtling into our solar system. Pure clickbait, however, is the claim that he is racing towards our earth, because he wouldn't even reach it if he had little arms and stretched really hard.
