In the age of social media, the topic of stalking is increasingly shifting into the digital world. By publishing private, internet-based data (doxing), those affected are massively threatened and put under pressure. We have put together 5 tips on how to behave when doxing.
Until now, most stalking victims knew quite quickly who was following and watching them. Because stalkers don't make much effort to hide. When it comes to digital stalking, however, you don't initially know who is responsible. Doxing is the internet-based collection and subsequent publication of personal data. Usually with malicious intent, a person collects publicly available information about another person, such as email address, telephone number, home location, place of work, date of birth, parental and friend addresses.
Doxing: The collection and publication of private data
The subsequent publication of the data is usually accompanied by a call to harm the person concerned, to publicly threaten them and to harass them by email, telephone or chat on social media. You usually only find out about doxxing when the data has already been published and you receive tons of insults and threats via email or messenger. The aim is to intimidate the person concerned. The idea is to create the impression that the perpetrator knows everything about a person. There are also threats of physical violence, often serious acts such as rape and murder. The perpetrator also asks other people to send hate messages to the published email address and telephone number. This massively intimidates the person concerned.
5 tips for those affected by doxxing:
- Legal action is possible! Find a counseling center nearby and then possibly a lawyer. The authors of the insults and threats can be charged with insult, slander or slander.
- Search the Internet for your own data. Get an overview.
- Take screenshots of the insults and hate comments. These can later be used as evidence.
- Request internet platforms to remove posts or publications.
- Check privacy settings on social media platforms, delete entries from phone books. Private data such as place of residence and telephone number do not have to be provided everywhere.
The motive for doxxing is often revenge after a breakup or feelings of rejection.
In addition, doxing often affects people whose private data is important to their profession, such as politicians, journalists and people who are politically active. The threat can get out of hand very quickly and then the person affected is no longer able to withstand the pressure. There are cases where you even had to change your job and place of residence.
