Parents have a special responsibility for young people's first steps on the Internet - but even they often have insecurities and gaps in knowledge.

paysafecard in Vienna is part of Paysafe (a leading specialized payment platform) and has a long-standing commitment to safe internet surfing. The team of experts has put together six current pieces of advice for parents who want to be good and competent companions for their children online.

Tip 1: Train the route through the internet like the route to school

The route through the net should be trained with children like the route to school. Where are danger spots? What do I have to pay attention to? What can happen? This includes explaining to children that unfortunately not every offer and not every person on the internet has friendly intentions. In any case, often walk the path together, don't leave the child alone - but let him act more and more alone, of course under supervision.

Tip 2: Basic feeling: caution instead of blind trust

Children cannot recognize many digital dangers - especially those that take even experienced users by surprise. That's why parents should teach them full concentration and a basic sense of caution and prudence when surfing. This can also be compared to being careful in traffic. The Internet is not a “part-time job”.

Tip 3: The Internet knows a lot about the Internet and its dangers

If you come across something strange online, you should do some research online. For many dangers there are pages where experiences and warnings are already documented. It is often enough to enter a keyword, an email address or a paragraph of text into a search engine to quickly find such warnings. But be careful: no result does not mean no danger!

Tip 4: Investing time in security is worth it

There are a wealth of age-specific filters and protection programs to keep inappropriate content and dangers away from children. Admittedly, it takes time to find the right one. But this time is well spent so that children are protected and cannot cause damage through ignorance if they fall into purchasing traps or click on links with serious consequences.

Tip 5: The healthy middle ground is really healthy

Some parents would like to ban their children from surfing at all. Others set no boundaries or rules. Both are wrong and lead to a potentially dangerous approach to modern communication. Because a complete ban usually just increases the appeal, complete freedom, on the other hand, can lead to dependencies and addiction. The parental role must also be actively lived in this topic. What is a healthy middle ground will of course also depend on the age and living situation of the family. In any case, extremes are only very short-term “solutions”.

Tip 6: Don't be too young when shopping online - and it's best to pay prepaid

Children should only be able to spend money online when they reach a certain age - and of course only transactions and amounts appropriate to their age. If prepaid payment methods are used right from the start, this increases the awareness of a fixed cost framework, as no more can be spent than was previously loaded. At the same time, no data (account, credit card, etc.) is entered here, so it is particularly safe to pay. If parents set a good example and use prepaid payment methods such as paysafecard or Paysafecash themselves, this further strengthens everyday awareness of safe online payments.

Udo Müller, CEO of paysafecard and an expert in secure online payments since the company was founded in 2000:

“Young people will continue to shape the development of everyday digital life and the digital marketplace. Their creativity and enthusiasm are crucial. But so that they can use all of this with the greatest security, they need a solid and optimally supported entry into the online world. Our contribution to this is payment solutions that do not require the transfer of personal data. Hundreds of thousands of secure transactions are made worldwide every day with paysafecard.” And he continues: “The Internet itself is not dangerous – what is dangerous is ignorance and naivety, as in every situation in life. That’s why we are committed to providing information and education about correct surfing behavior.”
