In Berlin, 61 trees were felled so that a cycle path could be renovated. The only problem is that nothing is being built there for the time being.

We received several inquiries about this sharepic that was circulating on social media. The question was whether 61 trees were actually felled pointlessly:

The text on the sharepic:

“61 trees were felled in Berlin for a cycle path that is not being built!
Responsible for this: The Green Senate Department for Transport and Climate Protection!”

This is not a fake!

Since we are sometimes very meticulous, we only have to make a small correction, which doesn't really make the situation any better:
"...it 's not being built" = "...it yet ", because the cycle path will be built at some point, and The trees would actually have had to be felled, but given the current status, it would only have been a few years later!

February 2018

At that point, there was already dissatisfaction with the felling of the 61 trees, as reported by the “ Tagesspiegel ,” among others. The reason: Heerstrasse is actually only optimized for cars; the narrow cycle path is more like a mogul slope. That's why the plan was to convert the narrow strip into a 1.60 meter wide cycle path, for which the trees had to be removed.

Although 92 new trees were to be planted nearby to create additional nesting opportunities, this only partially convinced critics.

August 2019

The trees have long since been felled, keep sprouting and have to be trimmed so as not to endanger road traffic... but a new cycle path has still not been built there. The reason for this is the new Berlin Mobility Act , which, among other things, provides for much wider cycle paths to be built. For this reason, it was decided not to build a cycle path there, which would have to be rebuilt in a few years anyway.

However, until cyclists can even ride next to each other, a lot of water can still flow down the Spree: before 2023 , and it could take another two years before it is completed.

The Senate Administration , whose heads are actually all members of Alliance 90/The Greens (the information in the sharepic is also correct in this respect), speaks of an “annoying planning error,” according to its spokesman Jan Thomsen. According to him, there had been no concrete planning preparations at the time the trees were felled. But since these exist now, it makes sense not to pursue the plans back then.

Summary

In fact, 61 trees were felled in Berlin for a cycle path, the construction of which was stopped due to the Berlin Mobility Act. A cycle path will still be built there, but construction will not begin until 2023 at the earliest, so the trees could have been there for at least another five years.
