Baden-Württemberg performs worst (almost 25 percent network gaps), while the city states perform best. The experts evaluated data from the Federal Network Agency .

Network expansion in cities more lucrative

“Network expansion in metropolitan regions is much more lucrative for operators and has more publicity than closing a dead zone in a sparsely populated, rural region. “Sometimes topographical obstacles also make expansion difficult, especially in the south,” says Jens-Uwe Theumer, Vice President Telecommunications at Verivox.

18.56 percent of Germany has “grey spots” – that is, out of a total of three network operators (Telekom, Vodafone, O2), only one or two can offer a data network. Anyone who has a contract with another network can only receive the old 2G network in such regions. This allows phone calls - but not mobile surfing or even small downloads, or perhaps sending a messenger message or SMS.

“White spots” in surface countries

Baden-Württemberg has the highest percentage of underserved areas, ahead of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria. In three regions more than 40 percent of the area is underserved, in another 16 regions over 30 percent. In the city states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen there are a maximum of 1.8 percent of the so-called gray spots. According to the current data, the northernmost federal state of Schleswig-Holstein comes out as the best area with 8.71 percent.

In addition, all German states still have “white spots”: In such regions there is no 4G or 5G network from any provider. On average in Germany, 2.94 percent of the area is affected; in Rhineland-Palatinate the average is highest at 4.56 percent. Of the 20 worst-served regions, nine are in Bavaria. The most data gaps nationwide are in Berchtesgadener Land at 24.17 percent. The city states also perform best here. You have no gaps in the data network.

The Deutsche Telekom network is the best developed nationwide. In October 2022, the ex-monopolist will be able to offer a 4G network for almost 90 percent of the area in Germany, while Telekom's 5G network operates in 56 percent of the country. Vodafone's numbers are almost the same at almost 90 and 55 percent respectively. The third network operator O2/ Telefonica only supplies 37 percent of Germany with 5G (4G coverage: 85 percent).
