Scammers blackmail with “masturbation video”. Please don't pay!
An email written in English terrifies its recipients: You were observed watching porn on the Internet via your computer's webcam! The email claims that your computer was hacked and that access to your camera was possible. And now you've been caught masturbating. What can you do about it? Well, to avoid publication of this video, you should pay €315 in the form of Bitcoins.
This is the following email, we say at this point: DO NOT pay! This email is an attempted scam.
As early as September 2017, the Lower Saxony police warned against this type of email on their “Ratgeber Internet” portal.
Blackmail email demands Bitcoin payment
The Lower Saxony police have several emails that are identical in content to the statements, but differ in the subject and Bitcoin address. The police describe certain text modules as fixed features:
- “You have been warned many times”
- “Anyone can make a mistake”
- “I clarified everything in the letter”
- “Take it as a lesson and live on”
According to the Lower Saxony police, the return addresses also differ. Also important: Neither the name of the recipient nor any details, such as the porn site allegedly used, are mentioned.
We agree with the police at this point that these emails were sent en masse and the perpetrator is hoping that he will meet someone who has actually previously watched porn on a device and thus gets the feeling that he has to pay.
Do not make any payments or contact the perpetrators. If there are any files attached or links included in the email (not the case so far), do not open them.
