More than 2,200 cases have been detected. Proceedings were opened and arrests of pedo criminals were made around the world.
Pedocriminals operate anonymously on the Internet
They operate on the Internet hidden behind pseudonyms. They exchange data and distribute illegal pornographic material. In 2012, fedpol received the first concrete indications that a person living in the canton of Aargau was distributing illegal pornographic material via GigaTribe under the pseudonym “Ninja Turtle”. The GigaTribe platform offers simple, unrestricted and, above all, anonymous data exchange. “Ninja Turtle” used this to distribute illegal pornographic material and exchange it with numerous other people.
It was unclear who was behind “Ninja Turtle.” What was clear, however, was that the data was distributed from the canton of Aargau. fedpol informed the Aargau cantonal police about the results so far. Further investigations ultimately led to the arrest of “Ninja Turtle” in 2012. The then 62-year-old German was convicted in 2015.
Pedocriminal profile taken over by police
“Ninja Turtle” did not disappear from the internet, but remained as a profile for undercover investigations. Specialists from fedpol and later the Aargau cantonal police used the profile to identify other anonymous pedo criminals. The multi-year covert operation on the Internet was successful: 2,200 pedo criminals were identified. Suspected perpetrators in Switzerland and worldwide could be reported to the responsible authorities. In this context, there were arrests in various cantons as well as in Croatia, Brazil, France, Peru, Romania and Spain, among others.
The perpetrators identified are not only people who consume pedo-pornographic material, but also so-called “hands-on” perpetrators who abuse children themselves. They hide behind pseudonyms and network across state and cantonal borders. Thanks to many years of intensive investigations and good cooperation - nationally and internationally - it was still possible to identify suspects and make numerous arrests.
Combating pedocrime on the Internet is resource-intensive and requires close cooperation both at the authority level and with the website operators. However, as Operation Ninja Turtle shows, this effort is worth it to protect potential victims.
And there is work to do!
