Photos of packaged dog meat are currently shocking users. You can see “Labrador and Collie steak”, but also a dog carcass on a hook.

For many people in this country it is unimaginable to eat dog meat. So it's no surprise that we received a few requests for photos that supposedly show organic dog meat.

These are the following photos:

The fact check

The photos of the packaged dog meat
The photos of the packaged dog meat “Labrador Steak” and “Collie Steak” are an initiative of the British animal rights group Animal Aid . As part of the annual “Vegan Month” campaign, Animal Aid offers the supposed dog meat for sale at various markets with a mobile trailer.

Animal Aid is against the killing of all animals for their meat. In Great Britain, as here, dogs are very popular and are treated as members of the family. Eating dog meat is therefore perceived by many people as “pathological” - Animal Aid wants to use this fact to its advantage and encourage people to develop the same love and care for other animals.

Unfortunately, some have misinterpreted the campaign and Animal Aid makes it clear that it does not support the killing of dogs - or other animals - for their meat, but rather advocates for a meat-free diet in the exact opposite way.

Disclaimer: Animal Aid opposes the killing of all animals for their meat. In the UK (where Animal Aid works), dogs are not eaten, and the idea that they might be is seen as sickening. Dogs are well-loved in the UK and are welcomed into people's homes as part of the family. Animal Aid used this deep affection for dogs to urge people to show the same love and care to other animals by not eating them. However, some people overseas have misinterpreted this campaign, either mistakenly or deliberately. Animal Aid categorically does not support the killing of dogs – or any other animals – for their meat. Instead we actively promote a diet free from all animal products.

The photo of the dog carcass hanging on the hook
The photo that can be seen in the right area of the collage and shows a dog carcass hanging on a hook can be found, for example, in a Wikipedia article about “Lychee and Dog Meat Festival” again.

This festival is also known as the Yulin Festival and has been held annually in Yulin (Guangxi), China, since 2009. ( We reported )

[mk_ad]

During the festival, the meat of around 10,000 dogs and cats slaughtered specifically for the festival is consumed. It is served with, among other things, lychees and liqueur.

Many people protest against the Yulin Festival, but even though a ban on the sale of dog meat during the festival was passed in 2017, this ban is not being enforced. ( See here )

Conclusion

The photos of the packaged dog meat have nothing to do with the dog hanging on the hook. In some cultures, dog meat is eaten - but not everyone there likes it. Very few people in this country can imagine eating dog meat.

The Animal Aid initiative generally speaks out against the consumption of meat, regardless of the animal. And there are also many who protest against the Yulin Festival.
