This policy is based on the Respectful Communication Policy and prohibits discussing opinions or debates about abortion, whether it is right or wrong, or political, religious or humanitarian views on the topic with colleagues.
Staff for repeal of policy
Now some employees are calling on management to rescind the policy after it emerged that the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn the country's abortion rights, according to politico.com .
In their opinion, the company's internal ban contradicts the fact that topics such as “Black Lives Matter”, transsexual rights, immigration or vaccinations can be discussed “respectfully”.
Abortion issue is divisive
Janelle Gale, Meta Vice President, sees the problem with this issue in that it would divide employees. She said that "even when people are respectful and try to express their views on abortion respectfully, some people may still feel like they are being attacked because of their gender or religion," according to a recording of her comments on this topic, which The Verge obtained. “It’s the one unique topic that pretty much always hits a protected class.”
Other US companies have already commented on this issue or announced measures. Tesla and Amazon, for example, announced that they would provide financial support to pregnant employees if they had to leave the country for a procedure.
Sheryl Sandberg, Meta's co-chief executive officer, publicly commented on the issue on her Facebook page after Politico published the leaked Supreme Court opinion.
“This is a frightening day for women across our country. If the leaked draft opinion becomes the law of the land, we will be deprived of one of our most basic rights. Every woman, no matter where she lives, must be able to decide freely whether and when she becomes a mother. Few things are more important to women’s health and equality.”
