Children are spending more and more time on social media. They make dance videos on TikTok or post pictures on Instagram. How can parents protect their children?
In “TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram” , the new guide from Stiftung Warentest, parents can find out how they can keep track of things themselves and support their children educationally and technically in safe use.
Children are rarely able to correctly assess the risks, dangers and effects of social networks. But unfortunately, parents often don't know the relevant apps from their own experience or use them differently than their children.
This guide gives parents an overview of the most important platforms and how they work. Not only the dangers, but also the fun, the added value and the opportunities of social networks play a role. It is not dogmatic, but rather explains the opportunities and dangers that the use of social media presents, so that parents can make their own educational decisions - individually according to their values and suitable for their children.
The dark side is diverse: all potential dangers, such as loss of control of privacy, psychological dependence on positive feedback, cyberbullying or even copyright infringements and cost traps in the advertising industry, are highlighted. It then explains what technical options parents can use to tailor their children's apps to their specific security needs - e.g. B. by switching off feedback or comment functions, restricting the audience, private mode of accounts, blacklists of comments, rejecting tracking, etc.
The author Tobias Bücklein is known on the social web as @dieserdad and is the father of Oskar (@dieseroskar), one of the most famous YouTubers of his generation. The educator and social media expert deals intensively with how children and young people can be supported and protected when using social media.
