Rumors are still circulating about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's fortune. A sharepic that has been circulating for months claims that his fortune is worth €1.2 billion. What is true about these allegations?
President Zelensky's assets - a realistic assessment
The colleagues at dpa-factchecking have summarized what is known about Volodymyr Zelenskyj's assets recent article
- The business magazine Forbes estimated his fortune at $20 million in April 2022
- The Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform disclosed the president's income in 2020: about 10,000 euros (336,000 hryna) in salary, 140,000 euros from royalties and 430,000 euros from real estate deals, investments and bank interest
- There are reliable sources for a holiday home in the Italian seaside resort of Forte dei Marmi, in Tuscany. The newspaper Il Tirreno wrote last August that the house was rented. The Ukrainian site slidstvo.info had already discussed the “villa” during the 2019 election campaign.
- The name Volodymyr Zelensky also appeared in the so-called “Panama Papers”. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote in October 2021 what was leaked at the time about shell companies in the tax haven and Zelenskyj's entanglements with the Ukrainian oligarch Ihor Kolomoiskyj.
Business Insider and the tabloid magazine oe24 also took a close look at the Ukrainian president's assets last spring. Both rely heavily on Forbes . Volodymyr Zelenskyj's real estate assets are said to be around four million dollars. He also holds 25 percent of the Ukrainian media group Studio Kwartal 95, worth around $11 million, Merkur There is also an estimated $2 million in the joint bank account with his wife Olena Selenska.
Bought a house for your parents in Israel?
And what about the house in the Israeli town of Rishpon that Volodymyr Zelensky is said to have bought for his parents? dpa traced the rumors back to messages in May 2022 that were published on Telegram and VKontakte. They were unable to find a credible source.
USA Today portal took up the claim that the Ukrainian president had bought his parents a swanky villa in Kyiv for $8 million - including a saltwater pool and three new cars. Verdict: wrong.
Very little is known to the public about the parents, but the rabbi of the observant Jews gave an interview to an Israeli newspaper in April 2022 in which he spoke in detail about his relationship with Oleksandr and Rymma Zelensky and a meeting with the president. The Jerusalem Post summarized the highlights of this interview in an article .
Conclusion: Volodymyr Zelenskyj's total assets are estimated by Forbes magazine to be around $20 million. There really is (or was) a holiday home in Tuscany. There are only persistent rumors about his parents' alleged villa in Israel, but no real sources.
