In recent days, clever fraudsters have been targeting cell phone owners' bank details. They ask their victims via text message to reactivate the supposedly deactivated bank account. The police warn not to respond to the text message.
In cases that became known to the police, those affected received a short message via SMS. The scammers suggest that the message comes from a financial institution and inform the recipients that the account is deactivated. At the same time, the recipient is asked to update their account information via a link embedded in the message.
The police warn: The link is dangerous! This directs those affected to a fake bank page created by the perpetrators in order to access the victims' access data and ultimately gain access to their account.
The scam is similar to that of “packet SMS,” a phenomenon known as “smishing” – a combination of the words “SMS” and “phishing.”
To avoid falling into the fraud trap, the police offer the following tips:
- Banks generally do not send SMS with links that should be clicked!
- Do not click or tap on links from unknown senders.
- Never confirm the installation of third-party apps.
- Under no circumstances should you give out TANs for your bank accounts.
- Question messages from senders you cannot identify. If in doubt, contact your bank using the service number you know.
- Alternatively, log in to your online account using the method you know and check whether there is a problem.
- Block the number of the sender of the fake SMS.
- Activate the third-party lock on your mobile device.
- In the event of damage, be sure to report it to the police!
