Police warn of “clipboard scam”
The most important thing about the clipboard mesh in brief:
- The police warn about the clipboard scam and make it clear that the men were neither deaf nor mute.
- Similar cases also usually involve con artists who want to arouse pity through their actions in order to receive monetary donations.
On Thursday (January 30, 2020), the police in Langenfeld caught four young men from Eastern Europe red-handed who had previously deprived two Langenfelds of small amounts of cash using the so-called “clipboard scam”. The police are once again using this current incident as an opportunity to warn against the scammers.
This is what happened:
In the afternoon, the quartet first approached several customers in the parking lot of a large discount store on the Hardt, and later in the parking lot of a neighboring hardware store. The men held clipboards in front of customers and claimed to be deaf and dumb. At the same time you asked for a donation.

According to current police findings, at least two customers fell for this scam. They each handed the quartet a small amount of cash and left the parking lot. However, a woman from Langenfeld realized that the scam was an attempt at trick fraud and did exactly the right thing by calling the police.
A short time later, the officers were able to find the quartet in the parking lot of the hardware store and temporarily arrest them. During the subsequent identity check, they discovered that the men, aged between 17 and 21, had no permanent residence in Germany and had traveled from Eastern Europe. Criminal proceedings were initiated against them.
The police warn against this scam and make it clear that the men were neither deaf nor mute. Similar cases also usually involve con artists who want to arouse pity through their actions in order to receive monetary donations.
The police appeal: Don't fall for the scammers' scam. Not everything that appears worthy of support at first glance is actually serious. If you are approached by such a person, be suspicious and, if in doubt, call the police. Under no circumstances should you hand over cash or other valuables!
