The door calendar from “Kinder” (Ferrero) is still called an Advent calendar, even if a tweet suggests otherwise.

The same thing every autumn: a narrative about the loss of tradition is told on social media (sometimes by politicians). In doing so, pseudo-evidence is used to show that Western Christian traditions (if there are any at all) are being lost. Just like the Advent calendar.

There is now this tweet with a photo on Twitter. In the photo you can see an Advent calendar from “Kinder”. However, what doesn't appear anywhere at first glance is the term “Advent calendar”. Instead, you read the word “gift warehouse” in the center.

The photo is distributed quite prominently on the private account of Bundestag member Stephan Brandner with the words “It used to be called #Advent Calendar, right?”

The Advent calendar fact check

In fact, such a calendar used to be called, among other things, an Advent calendar. In some places the term door calendar is also used, in Austria the fugue s is omitted and Advent calendars are written.

You have to decide for yourself to what extent such a calendar can be classified under Christian traditions, as it is still quite young. The tradition of such a door calendar during Advent only appeared in the 19th century and, according to ARTE, is a purely German invention that was intended to sweeten the waiting time for Christmas [see here ].

But let's get back to the suggestion: Does the calendar no longer have the name Advent calendar? Yes, he wears it. The photo in the tweet is the motif on the back of the calendar. On the front you can read the classic term “Advent calendar”. Further photos of this product can be found on Amazon, for example . This is the calendar in the “Wichtel-Werkstatt” version.

A trip to the nearest supermarket should have the same evidentiary effect: Since the calendars are currently on sale, you can easily check whether a “renaming” has taken place here. We dared to try it ourselves and can show: The name hasn't changed!

This should probably save Christmas.

Reactions

Was the whole thing just a deliberate provocation to create interactions and outrage? At least that's what Brandner claims in a recent tweet. It states that his posting was a “bet” and that the reactions were provoked.

There is also a corresponding post on the “Sorgenboy” Facebook page that interprets Brandner’s tweet in more detail.

Rule 1 on social media:
Don't reply to Stephan Brandner and don't retweet him. Don't jump over every stick he holds out.

He just wants to provoke and gain reach with his yapping.

Herbststern in Aldi: No reason to get excited!

Are we now all losing our “Christian-Western” culture because you can buy an autumn star (instead of a poinsettia) at Aldi in the fall? This is actually an issue for some people right now.
