The claim
The claim is circulating that Elon Musk is African-American, which accuses “left-wing greens” of racism.
Our conclusion
White South Africans like Elon Musk are descendants of the colonialists of the time, while African Americans are people with dark skin who live in the USA and whose families come from Africa.
In two tweets, the politician insists that the new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, is an African American. Both the politician and conservative circles in the USA either do not want to understand that the term is based on ethnicity and not on the country of origin or simply want to cause discord with the claim.
The claims
With these two tweets the politician wants to either provoke or show off her ignorance:
“So I understand this correctly: the Left Greens are now leaving Twitter, with an African-American boss, and going to Mastodon, whose founder is a native Russian from East Germany?”

“Since there was a lot of crying from left-wing greens in my last tweet, let me take note again: Elon Musk is African-American.”
Source: Twitter
As early as June 2022, the strictly conservative Republican politician Ron DeSantis, who is not seen as the “ smarter and more disciplined” Trump , jokingly referred to Elon Musk as an African American in a speech:
But the claim goes back even further: In December 2021, Republican Blake Masters, a Trump-backed candidate for the US Senate in Arizona, sparked a heated debate online about Musk's ethnic origins. The politician called Musk one of the “ richest African-American ” entrepreneurs in the country – which even made Tucker Carlson laugh, but Blake Masters seemed to mean it completely seriously:
In April 2022, the claim became even more credible to many when a black Republican politician claimed on Twitter that Musk was African American:
The Definition: What is an African American?
To do this, let's just take a look at various dictionaries, for example the Collins Dictionary (see HERE ):
“African Americans are black people living in the United States who are descended from families that originally came from Africa.”
Or in the Cambridge Dictionary (see HERE ):
“A person living in the United States who belongs to a race of dark-skinned people originally from Africa.”
The definition of the noun
“Referring to a person living in the United States who belongs to a race of dark-skinned people originally from Africa.”
The definition of the adjective
Or the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (see HERE ):
“an American of African and especially black African descent”
Why Elon Musk is not African American
The answer is already clear from the above definitions from several dictionaries: Elon Musk and his ancestors did not have and do not have black skin. He is the descendant of white colonialists.
Let's take a quick look at Musk's family tree:

As an example, let’s look at his great-grandfather Henry “Harry” Musk. He was born in England in 1863 and died in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1917 (see HERE ). Of the other great-grandfathers and mothers, only two were born in South Africa, all the others come from the USA and England.
In order for him to be considered African American by definition (see above), he would at least have to be the descendant of an African slave who was taken to the USA. However, his ancestors mostly come from England and the USA, which makes him a white South African - a descendant of white colonialists, but not an African American.
Conclusion
White South Africans, who are a minority in South Africa, are descendants of the colonialists of the time, while African Americans are people with dark skin who live in the USA and whose families come from Africa.
The twisted conclusion that “left-wing greens” are racist because Elon Musk is, after all, an African American is complete nonsense.
