All-clear: Warnings are currently circulating in Facebook groups, via WhatsApp and via email about a blue BMW or a man who approaches children in front of schools in Hürth and offers them chocolate. The Rhein-Erft district police have now clarified the circumstances: it was a one-off, spontaneous joke. Please do not share this warning!
On Thursday morning (January 26th), police officers found the completely innocent owner of a blue BMW that had been reported as suspicious at her home address in Kerpen. Police investigations revealed that her daughter was traveling in the vehicle on Wednesday (January 18). The young novice driver made it credible that her passenger (19) had eaten chocolate while driving. As a joke, he offered some of it to children in the area of a school in Hürth from the car. But the students didn't react to it. This was also confirmed by another witness who was also sitting in the BMW at the time.
All further investigations underline the credibility of the statements made.

How warnings and rumors arose
We have received letters from parents from several schools warning against approaching school children in Hürth: A man is said to have approached children on the way to school to the Don Bosco school in the Efferen district and offered them chocolate. At the Carl Orff primary school in Alstädten/Burbach, three boys were approached from a blue BMW. Chocolate was also offered here. Rumors on WhatsApp also speak of the Brothers Grimm Community Primary School in Gleuel.
The police say that “other similar circumstances were described to them by school children”. According to the current state of the investigation, these would be “misunderstandings or misinterpretations by these children”. Something like this had happened in the past. One complaint has already been withdrawn (as of January 26) because the legal guardian had massive doubts about the original descriptions after speaking to his child. The REK police state: “After a criminal police assessment of the facts presented, there is no criminal relevance.”
Please stop spreading such warnings and rumors.
The police take such reports very seriously
The Rhein-Erft district police take these reports from students and parents very seriously. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, the police had increased routine checks on the way to school. Local officers have been on patrol on school routes and in the area around schools since the beginning of the week. The traffic accident prevention police officers are also sensitized and look out for possible suspicious people before and during traffic lessons at schools.
The school management has already written to parents and made them aware of the correct behavior of children on the way to school. In principle, the children should not react to a possible approach from strangers, should continue on their way to school directly and quickly and reveal themselves to people they trust.
