“The promise of drone delivery has often felt like science fiction. We have worked for almost a decade to make it a reality,” Amazon announced in a press release on June 13, 2022. According to Amazon, teams of hundreds of scientists, engineers, aerospace experts and futurists have worked hard on this project, which is also intended to help reduce CO2 emissions.

Prime Air

The online giant calls its drone delivery program “Prime Air,” and the Californian town of Lockeford is the first location where packages will be delivered by multicopter. The more than 3,000 residents are an essential part of the project because, according to Amazon, their feedback on the processing of deliveries by drone is crucial to building a service that works.

Specifically, the drone is the MK27-2 model. A hexagonal drone with six propellers. According to Amazon, the shape allows for particularly high maneuverability and stability. But not every package can be delivered via Prime Air. The drone is only used for certain products when it comes to quick deliveries within less than an hour. The rest will continue to be delivered by messengers in parcel vans. When placing their order, customers should see the list of products and also receive the estimated arrival time.

This is how the drone parcel service should work

The drone should be able to recognize obstacles - including mobile ones, such as an airplane - and avoid them. When obstacles are identified, automatically change course to safely avoid them.

Amazon even goes so far as to say that it is not necessary for a human to observe the flight.

The drone will fly to the recipient's garden, lower itself and then drop the package. When she descends to deliver the package to a customer's backyard, she ensures there is a small area around the delivery location that is free of people, animals or other obstructions, the release said.

If delivery to Lockeford works as planned, Amazon plans to expand Prime Air to other locations. The company still wants to publish photos and videos. The online mail order company is currently waiting for approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and local authorities.
