Millions of customers buy from the online mail order company Amazon - and often rely on the reviews left by supposed buyers when making their purchase decision.
But in many cases they are fake! COMPUTER BILD explains how the fake reviews business works on Amazon.
Artificially hyping up products through good reviews: This is the business of dubious agencies that offer so-called reputation management. Anyone can potentially apply as a freelancer via portals like “TesterJob” to write reviews for money. The only condition: the reviews must be positive.
COMPUTER BILD editors tried it out and were hired as reviewers. Although the products were sent for testing, it was not checked whether the goods were actually tried out. What's more: a three-star rating was criticized by the client and suggested that it should be improved and made into a five-star review.

COMPUTER BILD confronted Amazon with the research results. The online retailer says it takes strict action against false reviews. However, according to a reviewer who works for a reputation agency, five out of ten reviews on Amazon are currently based on fake entries.
Distinguishing real from fake reviews is extremely difficult. Customers only have to compare the reviews with those from other providers - or return the product if they don't like it.
You can read the full report about the fake reviews in the current COMPUTER BILD issue 26/2019, which will be available in stores from December 6, 2019.
