Amazon is currently having to deal with harsh allegations that the company changed the algorithm in its online shop in order to increase its profits.
This now apparently shows more of its own brands when searching, reports the Wall Street Journal . The site relies on statements from Amazon employees who claim to have worked on the internally controversial project.
The algorithm is said to have been optimized at the end of 2018 so that customers are no longer shown the best-selling and most relevant items, but rather those items that are more profitable for the company. According to the statements, the adjustment was preceded by a year-long dispute between the executives of Amazon's retail stores in Seattle and the so-called search team, which opposed the change.

This algorithm change is also considered particularly sensitive because both the USA and the EU are reviewing the company's role as a marketplace operator and operator of its own branded products. Such a change in the algorithm would lead to a distortion of competition, which would give Amazon greater advantages over other companies that offer their goods on the platform.
“ The search engine should search for relevant articles, not for more profitable articles ,” said one of the project employees.
Amazon itself contradicts the allegations.
