whistleblowers, Amazon is planning an internal chat app in which terms such as “ toilet ” or “union” will be blocked.

Communication within the Amazon workforce is possible via app, but please do not use the English-language words “union”, “salary increase”, “unfair” or even “slave labor”. As the investigative portal “The Intercept” reports, citing internal documents from the e-commerce giant, the terms are to be automatically blocked in a social media app, a type of internal workforce network, planned for April in the USA.

Stars and badges

The application is being developed so that employees of the Seattle-based company can give each other so-called “shout-outs” in order to recognize and praise good work performance from colleagues. According to the report, a “playful reward system” is at the heart of the yet-to-be-launched social network. If there is a lot of praise for the respective work performance that increases the “business value” of the group, there are virtual stars and even badges for the employees.

The plans are now being implemented after, according to the report, top Amazon managers considered such a concept to be useful at an internal meeting last November. In this context, “The Intercept” particularly quotes Amazon’s global head of consumer goods business, Dave Clark. Ultimately, the aim is to reduce the high fluctuation of employees in the company. This would not only have positive effects in terms of employee satisfaction, but also increase their productivity.

The Verge, Amazon evades questions about its ethically questionable actions: “Our teams are always thinking about new ways to help employees engage with one another,” says Amazon spokeswoman Barbara Agrait to the magazine. “This particular program has not yet been approved and may change significantly or even never start. If it starts at some point, there are no plans for many of the words you mention to be checked,” the press spokeswoman continued.
