100 complaints about scam calls involving Amazon vouchers within 24 hours

“In the latest scam, which we have recently become aware of through numerous complaints, fraudsters pose as Amazon employees on the phone. They mostly speak English and try to obtain personal information from those they call using very simple tricks,” warns Dr. Klaus M. Steinmaurer, RTR Managing Director for the Telecommunications and Post Department. “As far as we know, the fraudsters either promise an Amazon cash voucher, or want to provide information about an alleged order, or want to compare the account details of the person being called,” explains Steinmaurer.

Don't provide any information and hang up immediately - because Amazon won't call you!

“Many of us wait every day for a package from Amazon. It is therefore very likely that the fraudsters will reach someone by phone who is currently waiting for a package and is therefore particularly receptive to supposed calls from Amazon. But no reputable company calls its customers and asks for extensive confidential data!", explains Steinmaurer and advises, "The best recipe against these scams for those called is: healthy mistrust and, if there is the slightest doubt, end the phone call immediately! And if you give out data by mistake – then go to the police!”
