Only 14 percent of Americans believe false claims about Ukraine — fewer than those who take false claims about COVID-19 vaccines at face value (18 percent). This is the result of a survey of 22,234 citizens in all 50 US states as part of the “COVID States Project” . This is supported by the universities of Northeastern, Harvard, Northwestern and Rutgers. However, up to 50 percent of respondents report that they cannot confidently identify at least one false claim about Ukraine.
Gullibility and Co
45 percent of those surveyed who believe at least one piece of fake news about Ukraine are also wrong about reports about corona vaccines. In contrast, fewer than one in ten (eight percent) of those who recognized all of Ukraine's false claims believed false vaccine claims. Republicans are five percentage points more likely than Democrats to believe false claims about Ukraine. When it comes to fake news about COVID-19, Republicans outperform Democrats by 15 percentage points.
The most widely used sources of news about Ukraine are social media, cited by 37 percent of respondents. Of these respondents, 16 percent have at least one misperception about Ukraine. In comparison, 25 percent of respondents cited social media as a source of news about COVID-19. 20 percent of these respondents have at least one misjudgment in connection with the corona vaccine.
Russia is down
Americans feel much closer to Ukraine than to Russia. The researchers determined this using a “feeling scale” ranging from 0 to 100. The proximity to Ukraine is 77 points and that to Russia is only 17 points. At 37, the difference is significantly smaller among those surveyed who have at least one misjudgment about Ukraine. Even among the Republicans, with Ukraine leading by 59, and the independents by 56, the gap is significantly smaller than among the Democrats, who have a lead of 69.
