Beware of fake Microsoft employees
Last Saturday, a 56-year-old from Ilmenau fell victim to a trick scam. The gentleman received a supposed error message on his computer in connection with a telephone number. In the following phone call, the unknown fraudster posed as an employee of Microsoft and asked for access to the computer via remote maintenance software. Several transfers totaling around 5,000 euros were made via this access. The police are now investigating fraud.
The police warn against this scam and give the following tips on the topic: Fake Microsoft employee
- Companies such as Microsoft will not contact you without asking. If a supposed employee still contacts you: hang up!
- Do not give out any confidential information (bank details, etc.).
- Do not allow strangers access to your computer, for example via remote maintenance software.
