A picture has been circulating on social media for several years and we have received repeated inquiries about it: Angela Merkel at a young age with a medal.
Now there is nothing wrong with a medal alone, but it is supposed to be a special award: Apparently, according to the conclusions on the sharepic, Angela Merkel was honored with it because, as IM Erika, she “delivered her own compatriots to the knife”.
These sharepic(s), which are circulating both in black and white with incomplete text and in color, are:

The text on the sharepic, which shows an old photo of Merkel with a small, pinned medal on the left and a close-up medal on the right, reads:
Angela Merkel alias >IM Erika<.
Informant for the former GDR State Security and recipient of the Lessing Medal.
Spy assigned to the regime critic Robert Havemann, who is under house arrest.
Image from the Stasi Havemann file; not approved by Merkel. IM = Informal employee of the STASI, also previously denied by Merkel.
Today Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and IM “Mom”.
What we are interested in here is the photo that is claimed to be from the Havemann file, which has not been released, as well as the medal that is suggested to be the Lessing Medal. In addition, the picture makes it sound as if the Lessing Medal was something that was received in the GDR for special services in the sense of state security.

Does the picture show Merkel with that medal?
that the medal in the picture on the right not the medal that Merkel is wearing in the picture:

While the medal Merkel wears round , the medal on the right is square .
The medal in the large picture is an ordinary badge “for exemplary work” that has nothing to do with the Stasi. purchase this badge on all possible sales platforms for 20 – 30 euros .
And what kind of medal does Merkel wear?
This is actually the Lessing Medal!
In the GDR, you received this medal upon completion of the 10th grade of the Polytechnic High School or the 12th grade of the Extended High School if you passed with the grade “passed with distinction.” An exemplary partisan attitude or social commitment was also required. And, this is no secret either, Merkel was actually in the FDJ and, as she says , had adapted.

And the photo?
This is not from a secret Stasi file, but an ordinary, published private photo of Angela Merkel, as it was published in several newspapers when her biography .

Conclusion
Neither a secret photo from a Stasi file nor a Stasi medal. The photo was published dozens of times, she received the medal when she graduated from school, the badge in the picture on the right has nothing to do with it.
