Common practices for animal testing really don't sound good: burns to the eyes or skin, cramps, paralysis and inflammation are frequently mentioned consequences for the test animals, which are usually killed afterwards.
A goal of the German Animal Welfare Association has finally been achieved; Cosmetics whose ingredients have been tested on animals are now banned in the EU. This was probably preceded by years of struggle and lots of attempts to make exceptions possible.
The real problem, however, is that there are still gaps. Cosmetics manufacturers “…will continue to be allowed to use chemical substances in the future that are used in other products such as cleaning products, wall paints or medicines and that have been tested in animal experiments for market approval,” as the Animal Welfare Association explains. Stupid for the animals: This applies to a lot of substances. According to animal rights activists, a general ban on animal testing for all tests would basically help here.
What can I do?
According to the German Animal Welfare Association, thousands of laboratory animals are used every year to develop new active ingredients that can also be used in cosmetics. At the same time, many of the ingredients that are already on the market in the form of cosmetics have long been tested - people are always researching new possibilities. In the case of certain chemical-synthetic substances such as oxidation hair dyes, UV filters and preservatives, it can be assumed that these have already been tested in numerous animal experiments. In addition, China requires the import of certain cosmetic products that ingredients have been tested on animals. The tests are not being carried out for the European market, but for export. What else can you buy that has not been tested on animals?
Various symbols stand for cosmetics that have not been tested on animals - for example the vegan symbol or the natural cosmetics seals NATRUE or COSMOS/BDIH .
Hare with a Protective Hand seal is issued by the International Manufacturers’ Association for Cosmetics, Natural Cosmetics and Natural Products (IHTN). Substances that were tested on animals after January 1, 1079 are prohibited here.
The international seal of “ Crueltyfree international ” with a jumping hare as a symbol also identifies cosmetics that have not been tested on animals. The difference to the “Rabbit with Hand” seal: Here the manufacturer himself sets the deadline as to when animal testing was no longer allowed to be carried out for his ingredients.
The animal protection organization PETA also issues a seal for cruelty-free cosmetics .
