According to the Danish dog law, strict action is taken. It can lead to the confiscation and even killing of a dog.
Animal welfare experts advise against vacationing with dogs in Denmark – the most important thing to start with:
If you own a dog listed in Denmark, you should avoid going on holiday. If you own such a dog or if the four-legged friend is involved in a biting incident, this can lead to the dog being confiscated or even killed.
Holiday with your dog in Denmark
Many German dog owners go to Denmark on vacation. Pleasant climate, dunes and beaches, as well as easy accessibility by car speak for a holiday with your four-legged friend in the neighboring country.
However, you should definitely find out about the Danish dog law. Particular attention should be paid to the obligation to keep dogs on a leash on Danish beaches between April 1st and September 30th. A biting incident can lead to the dog being confiscated and, in the worst case scenario, even death.

Dog law in Denmark
Animal protection organizations such as TASSO, FOUR PAWS and the VDH warn against traveling to Denmark with your own dog.
The dog law in Denmark was changed two years ago, but the ban in force since July 1, 2010 still applies to 13 dog breeds classified as dangerous: American Bulldogs, American Staffordshire Terriers, Boerboels, Dogo Argentinos, Fila Brasileiros, Kangals, Pitbull Terriers , Sarplaninacs, Tornjaks, Tosa Inus, Caucasian Owtcharkas, South Russian Owtcharkas and Central Asian Owtcharkas are not allowed to be bred, kept or imported into Denmark.
Mixed breed dogs that resemble one of these breeds are also included here. Here the dog owner must be able to prove beyond doubt by means of proof of origin that their dog does not belong to any of the listed dog breeds.
If you stay in Denmark with a dog of these breeds, you have to expect the dog to be confiscated by the police or even killed. If dogs are involved in a biting incident in Denmark, they are also at risk of this fate. By the way, it makes no difference whether you live in Denmark or are just here for vacation.
Criticism of “Dog Experts”
Since July 1, 2014, it is no longer police officers who decide whether a dog is killed, but rather so-called “dog experts”.
Udo Kopernik, press spokesman for the VDH, criticizes this provision because the legislation has still not specified what training the “dog experts” must demonstrate in order to still be able to decide whether a dog lives or dies.
Official figures from the Danish Ministry of Agriculture say that so far over 600 dogs have been killed under the Danish Dog Law. However, the Danish organization “fairdog” estimates this number to be much higher.

Endless discussions about breed lists
Sarah Ross from “FOUR PAWS” sees no dog as vicious or dangerous from birth.
Whether a dog is actually dangerous depends on numerous breed-independent factors - such as human error. Mike Ruckelhaus, head of domestic animal protection at “TASSO”, also believes that classifying dogs based on their breed is scientifically untenable. Breed lists would not make any real contribution to protecting against dangerous dogs.
