The claim
Annalena Baerbock speaks of “my African state” in a speech. This excerpt is now being spread and panned on social media.
Our conclusion
Baerbock's statement is taken out of context here. It comes from her speech at the Foreign Office, in which she echoes the statements of other foreign ministers.
Does Germany’s Foreign Minister Baerbock actually describe her home country as an “African state”?
Sometimes she receives a kind of approval on social media. A user, for example, posts the corresponding video snippet and comments on it with the words: “My African state. If you look at many German city centers, you are inclined to agree with Baerbock on this point. Unfortunately. We’re changing that!”

However, no one seems to care where the statement comes from. It would be so easy.

In the screenshot of the video posted on Facebook, you can see writing on the lectern. If we enlarge a section and improve the quality a little, what is written here can be seen a little better:

" Foreign Office. Berlin, September 5th - 8th, 2022 “
On the website of the Foreign Office we can find the appropriate event for this date: 20th Conference of Heads at the Foreign Office .
Annalena Baerbock gave a speech at this conference on September 5th. The statement regarding the African state comes from that speech. The Foreign Office tweeted the livestream of the speech. The statement can be heard from around minute 36:40.
transcript of that speech can also be found on the Foreign Office website, in which we can read:
And I heard exactly that again and again in my conversations with many foreign ministers: “The world is different than it was in 1970, even here in my African state.” And these colleagues don’t ask: “Where were you in 1970?” But rather: “Where were you in the last few years when the conflicts raged here?”
Annalena Baerbock, speech at the 20th Conference of Heads at the Federal Foreign Office on September 5, 2022
The German Foreign Minister quoted the statements of colleagues who spoke about their own countries - including the African state. There is no connection with Germany here.
Conclusion
Annalena Baerbock did not describe Germany as “her African state”.
Rather, this is an excerpt from her speech at the 20th Conference of Heads of the Foreign Office on September 5, 2022. Here she reproduced content from conversations with foreign ministers. The short excerpt from the speech that is now circulating on social media has been taken out of context and is being circulated without any context.
