One of the important tools for detecting hoaxes is reverse image search. This topic was of interest to many users in 2019!

Why is this search method so important? A status message with a hard image: Is the image part of this content? The “hybrid fake” is very common, in which either the image shows a real situation, but the accompanying text is incorrect, or the content of the text is correct, but is depicted incorrectly. A reverse search for images helps here.

Problem from here: Searching for images on a smartphone is not as easy as on a PC, or can only be carried out in a roundabout way. Mobile Internet use has long accounted for the majority of surfing behavior.

There's nothing wrong with that, but it's a little annoying when you want to do an image search on your smartphone. Unfortunately, this doesn't work as easily as you're used to on a desktop PC or notebook. Even worse: the way Google describes mobile image searches cannot be carried out, especially for images in social media apps and messengers.

You need the Chrome browser as an app on your smartphone, then you can at least use the image search to a limited extent. This limited search is quite easy to use, but only works for images displayed within the browser app:

Google describes: Reverse image search on a smartphone or tablet

You can use Google to search for images that match those in the search results. This is available in the Chrome app (Android and iPhone or iPad).

  1. Use the Chrome app to perform a search.
  2. Tap the image you want to open a larger version.
  3. Press and hold the image and tap Search for this image using Google .

Can be done with detours

As mentioned above in the text, all images that are displayed in apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram remain unusable because the browser app's image search does not offer the upload of images from the smartphone's memory. It is precisely the images on Facebook or WhatsApp that you would like to quickly verify using the image search.

Unfortunately, you can only get to your destination via detours! The website ctrlq.org/google/images/ . If you click on the “Upload Picture” button, a selection overview of the images from the device memory opens. There you can find images from WhatsApp messages, Instagram or Facebook Messenger.

If you want to search for images that you find in the Facebook app, you should save them beforehand (hold down the image and select Save in the menu that appears). It is also possible to take a screenshot and briefly edit this screenshot, thereby highlighting the area of the image that you would like to search for. Note: The screenshot function is not triggered with the same key combination on every cell phone. Please inform yourself about the specific model of your smartphone.

So after you have uploaded your picture at this point, you have to scroll down the website a little bit until the “SHOW MATCHES” button appears. Please tap on this and the Google results page will open for the corresponding image that you uploaded previously.

Another detour: apps

And of course there is also a selection of apps that you can install on your smartphone, which can also access the device's memory and therefore also load images into Google's image search. The search term “image search” in the respective Apple or Google stores leads to corresponding results. Of course, you should also look at access and reviews of the apps beforehand.

For example, the “Reverse Image Search” app we used in the test carried out the image search without any complications.
