A rumor has been circulating online for some time that jeans don't belong in the washing machine. Sounds gross? We did the fact check for you!

Jeans, originally invented as work clothing, have become an integral part of German fashion consciousness; the garment has gone from being the work clothes of a simple worker to an everyday companion that can even be worn on more noble occasions (please make sure without holes and with a sporty jacket).

When we talk about classic jeans, we mostly mean denim jeans. “Denim is the classic of all denim materials and the most original of all materials for making jeans. The solid fabric is woven using a two-thread process and usually consists of a white thread that is interwoven with an indigo blue warp thread."

So what's with the myth that these pants should never be washed? Jeans are made of a particularly durable material and dyed indigo blue.

The biggest problem with regular washing is that the color fades with each wash and, in the worst case, the trousers appear in different shades of blue. In addition, the denim material is able to adapt individually to our bodies and habits, so that the shape adapts to cell phones or wallets carried in trouser pockets, for example. We shape our pants virtually every time we wear them.

How do we deal with the problem of increasing odor pollution?

Experts give a variety of tips for this: the jeans should be hung on the window, balcony or in the garden to air out so that the material can ventilate and recover. On days when the weather throws a spanner in the works, it is possible to put the trousers in the dryer with a scented cloth and then use the “ventilate” switch to let them become odorless again. For those of us who don't have a dryer, there's the ultimate insider tip, which is to put the jeans in the freezer and store them there for 24 hours, so that in addition to the annoying smells, there are also all sorts of unwanted bacteria that we get from the subway or in everyday life Dragging the bus along, getting killed.

Admittedly, the tips described above sound complicated, but in addition to longer durability, this can also ease your ecological conscience. All alternative cleaning methods save energy, help the environment and also save a lot of money because the jeans have a much longer lifespan.

Jeans: But be careful!

The instructions described above only apply to classic jeans! For stretch pants or jeans that have other artificial additives, such as polyester, etc., the rule is that they must be washed every 14 days to regain their original shape, otherwise the pants will wear out.

What to do if you have stubborn stains?

When asked about the washing habits for his jeans, Levi's boss Bergh has sworn for years never to wash his jeans, but rather to rub out stains with a sponge or an old toothbrush or spread salt water on the jeans and then let them air dry. In any case, the jeans boss also avoids washing his jeans in a washing machine.

In summary, we can confirm the myth that classic jeans should not be washed, but should be treated with alternative cleaning options described above. This guarantees optimal handling and a long service life for our favorite piece of clothing.
