A very recent text about Malena Ernman was distributed in chain letters on Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter in 2019.

This text is accompanied by a small collage of images featuring Malena Ernman. In each of these 4 pictures she is holding an alcoholic drink in her hand.

The chain letter uses these photos as an opportunity to describe Ernman as an alcoholic. What's more, the chain letter claims that Malena Ernman also carried out this "drinking" while she was pregnant with Greta and that Greta Thunberg does not have Asperger's syndrome, but rather FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome). In the author's opinion, this would mean that Greta Thunberg is not talented, but rather has a lower IQ.

The chain letter and its argument structure can be found at the end of this article. First of all, the fact check on Malena Ernman's photos:

Origin of the images

Malena Ernman can be seen in all 4 pictures. Ernman is actually Greta Thunberg's mother. These pictures actually show Ernman celebrating, which is no secret:

Malena Ernman won the Melodifestivalen in Malmö in 2009 ( see here ). This was the preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest. This took place in Moscow in 2010, where she competed as starting number 4 with her title “La Voix” ( see here ).

In this respect, there were also articles like this one with the title “Jag vill dricka champagne ända fram till Moskva (I want to drink champagne all the way to Moscow)” ( see here ). One of the images from the collage can already be found in this article.

The other three photos come from the same context and show Ernman celebrating her victory in the 2009 preliminary round. The corresponding report with further images from the collage:

These pictures are from spring 2009. Greta Thunberg was born on January 3rd, 2003 and was already 6 years old at that time.

Ad hominem bashing

Greta Thunberg and the FFF movement are constantly subject to bashing attacks on social media. These attacks have less of a substantive nature and are more ad hominem attacks. In this case primarily against Malena Ernman and secondarily against Greta Thunberg.

It is not a question of whether the claims in the chain letter are true, whether they are facts, or whether there is evidence, but in most cases they are constructed and suggestive.

Bashing a person as a representative of the climate debate is always easier than concentrating on factual arguments (From Focus : “Psychologist explains where the hatred of Greta Thunberg comes from”)

Here a topic is given a face, which on one side is declared an icon and on the other side an enemy. Both should be viewed critically.

The attacks on Thunberg, but also Malena Ernman, are ultimately about discrediting them personally and devaluing their factual arguments (apart from the fact that the arguments mostly come from renowned scientists). Just like you know from bad American courtroom series, in which the evil lawyer tries to label a witness as untrustworthy with trivial details.

Whether Greta Thunberg can be diagnosed with FAS is a matter for a doctor and not for a layman comparing photos from the internet. The extent to which her mother drank alcohol during pregnancy is initially an unproven claim.

The photos cited as evidence come from the context of a major event in which she emerged victorious and which took place in 2009, when Greta Thunberg was already alive and a few years old. Two of them were even recorded in Malmö on the same evening.

Photos of her drinking alcoholic beverages during pregnancy cannot be found on the Internet. Likewise, there are no medical diagnoses about Greta Thunberg. So we are initially dealing with allegations for which the author does not adequately present the evidence.

Why does this form of “ad hominem bashing” against Greta Thunberg exist?

Focus interviewed a psychologist about this and published a very interesting article entitled “Psychologist explains where the hatred of Greta Thunberg comes from” ( see here ).

It is the fear of losing the status quo that has been achieved that drives people to see Greta Thunberg as an enemy. The fear of change (“I've worked hard for my life, now should I change everything?”), the fear of losing the things I've worked for and perhaps also the fear of losing a little wealth.

If you would like to read a calm and nuanced article about climate change and Greta Thunberg, we recommend the article “Greta, Christian and Climate Change” by Christian Buggisch ( here ). Buggisch wrote three of the famous what-is-what books together with his father, including the book on the subject of climate ( compare ).

The chain letter about Malena Ernman as a whole:

Net discovery:
Proster! This is Greta's mother, Malena Ernman. It's not that easy to find photos of her without a glass or beer in her hand; she likes to share photos of the beer she's drinking on Twitter in the afternoon. Ernman seems to be one of those typical Scandinavian alcoholics who starts the day with beer.

Unfortunately, she probably ruined her two daughters because of her drinking during pregnancy. Doctors have clearly diagnosed Greta with FAS, i.e. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The Asperger explanation is probably only intended to disguise the actual diagnosis of FAS and suggest that Greta has insular talent and high intelligence.

Unfortunately, FAS children only have IQs in the range of 70-90 and are severely limited in other ways. Greta reads the speeches that a gigantic PR machine has written for her in the background in order to trigger feelings and indignation against adults among young people worldwide. Of course, Greta should not be criticized because of her obvious disability, on the contrary - there is a massive demand for consideration.

Greta is a badly abused, unhappy child, her face during the grotesque UN climate speech is a cry for help. If she doesn't get into expert therapeutic hands soon, this young person's story will end badly
