Just a shocking “warning”? Or is it the truth? We asked ourselves that at the beginning of the summer. – A scary accident! A vehicle has crashed into a guardrail, which now stretches across the vehicle.

There is a bloody story about this picture: Apparently the driver was distracted. He had his smartphone in his hand and that caused this terrible accident. Even worse: now it is said that half his body was found in the trunk with the smartphone in his hand:

The upper half of this accident victim's body was found in the trunk with the cell phone in his hand!

But did this accident really happen the way the text says?

Fact check

The colleagues at Snopes have already dedicated an article to this photo, as this claim was originally published in English ( see here ). In fact, this is a so-called hybrid fake: one part of the posting is inevitably true, but the other part is false. This means the overall statement is not correct.

The real part: This is an original photo of an accident scene. It appeared in October 2010 on the Flickr account of EMS Flight Crew, an international community of aviation medics. Snopes believes the driver survived the accident because the image was tagged with terms like “air evac,” “air rescue,” and “life flight.” There was no mention of a smartphone, SMS or anything similar when it was first published.

The EMS Flight Crew again used the image as a sensational posting in February 2012, with the corresponding Facebook page asking its users to write a headline for this image. This also resulted in the comment “Don't text and drive” ( compare ).

In May 2012, the EMS Flight Crew published this picture again on Facebook. This time one of the headline suggestions was adopted and for the first time this image was titled “Don't text and drive” ( see here ).

The conclusion from Snopes

Snopes does not believe that the horror story surrounding this image is true. There are no official reports of such a terrible accident. Snopes also wrote to the EMS Flight Crew a year ago and asked for a response to this picture, but apparently never received one.
