The police warn against calls from false debt collection agencies. The payments are unjustified and do not have to be paid.

Call from wrong debt collection agency

A 53-year-old received a call from a supposed debt collection agency.
Apparently 5,400 euros are due for participation in a competition in 2017.

For years, dubious debt collection agencies have been trying to take money out of their victims' pockets using flimsy reasons. A reminder is particularly often issued after users have registered with fraudulent streaming services . The demands for money are unjustified and do not have to be paid.

But fraudsters don't just try their luck online; they also like to call directly or send mail. As this current case from the Ilm district shows:

A 53-year-old received a call from a supposed debt collection agency on Monday afternoon. To take part in a competition in 2017, a payment of 5,400 euros was required by bank transfer. The person called did not comply with this unjustified request.

She correctly called the police. A report of attempted fraud was filed.

For calls of this type, the police advise you:

  • Don't let unjustified reminders or threats from a debt collection agency unsettle you.
  • Notify the police if demands are made for alleged participation in a competition.
  • Do not respond to such demands and do not make any promises over the phone.
  • Never give out personal information: telephone numbers and addresses, account details, sort codes, credit card numbers or similar.
