Baby cries: App distinguishes hunger from pain or “just fuss”

The new smartphone app “ ChatterBaby ” analyzes recorded baby cries in real time so parents can find out why their child is so distressed.

According to the developers, the application determines whether the baby is hungry, crying in pain or just in a bad mood.

Interpret anger outbursts

“ChatterBaby compares your baby's sounds with the sounds in its database and predicts why your baby is crying. Using artificial intelligence, the algorithm names the reason for the scream with an accuracy of over 90 percent and displays more than 90 percent of all cries of pain,”

the developers advertise on their website.

ChatterBaby users have to record a sequence of around five seconds of the baby's cries with their smartphone. The app then analyzes over 6,000 different acoustic features of the recording to compare the characteristics of the sounds with a database of more than 2,000 samples created by the team.

To create the database, the app developers recorded, among other things, children being vaccinated and having their ears pierced in order to understand the acoustic characteristics of pain outbreaks.

Continuous improvement

The team also reached out to a group of select mothers to correctly categorize the remaining two areas - hungry and just fuss. During the training phase, the mothers each had to decide unanimously what a scream could indicate.

Although the app is already available, work continues to improve the database. Every time the app is used to interpret a baby's cries, the audio recording is stored on the servers to continually improve the algorithm.
