In view of a security gap, the US technology company Apple is calling for software updates on iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. Hackers could use the vulnerabilities to take control of the devices and access data, Apple said.
The two vulnerabilities were found in WebKit, the browser engine that powers Safari and other apps, and the kernel, the core of the operating system. The two vulnerabilities affect both iOS and iPadOS as well as macOS Monterey .
The company said the WebKit flaw could be exploited if a vulnerable device accesses or processes "maliciously crafted web content," while the second flaw allows a malicious application to execute "arbitrary code with kernel privileges," which is full Access to the device means. The two vulnerabilities are believed to be related.
It is not uncommon for attackers to first exploit a vulnerability in the device's browser to break into the operating system, giving the attacker widespread access to the user's sensitive data.
Which Apple devices are affected
- iPhone models 6S and newer
- iPad Air 2 and newer
- iPad 5th generation and newer
- iPad mini 4 and newer
- iPod touch (7th generation)
- all iPad Pro models
