Started weak, slowed down a lot
With the introduction of the function, German users were now able for the first time to look around certain areas around and in large cities and metropolitan areas, and no longer just from a bird's eye view. What is not only great for tourists was a major invasion of privacy for the affected population. There were increasing complaints and so Google had to make thousands of house facades unrecognizable. Shortly afterwards, Google shut down developments in Germany.
Bite into the apple
Now Google has to literally bite the bullet, because Apple has now followed suit with a similar function. There is hardly a spot that cannot be explored using the “Look Around” function – symbolized by small binoculars on the map. The wait was worth it because the high-resolution photos taken with the Apple camera cars make Google's shots look old.
Data protection and privacy
In order not to be confronted with the same problems as Google, Apple took data protection very seriously from the start. Close cooperation with responsible data protection authorities and the guarantee that all personally identifiable details such as faces or license plates have been made unrecognizable leaves a good feeling.
Apple also goes one step further when it comes to collecting user data. Location data is obscured on the servers and assigning data to a specific user is no longer possible due to changing IDs.
