Almost half of potential Gen Z recruits between the ages of 17 and 24 use video platforms. A big pool for the army?!

Despite the US Army's ban on TikTok on mobile phones, many soldiers continue to use the platform to recruit young recruits. US Senator Marco Rubio is now putting pressure on the soldiers and demanding stricter measures.

U.S. recruiting offices face the growing challenge of reaching members of Generation Z and getting them interested in the military. This is shown by a new report from Nextgov . Almost half of Generation Z uses TikTok regularly. This also includes many 17 to 24 year olds who the US Army so urgently needs.

Army is looking!

Since December 2019, soldiers have been banned from installing the Chinese video platform on their army cell phones due to national security concerns. However, many soldiers continue to use TikTok on their personal cell phones to reach potential recruits and interest them in a military career. Some soldiers are very successful and sometimes have over half a million followers.

US Senator Marco Rubio is now putting pressure on the soldiers in a letter and calling for stricter measures due to the platform's connections to the Chinese government. “TikTok is known to collect a large amount of biometric and other sensitive data and has a growing database containing the personal information of nearly one in four Americans,” Rubio said.

“From a military perspective, troop movements can be tracked, profiles can be created and data can be collected, misused or manipulated. The Chinese government is known for controlling, torturing and killing critics of the system. “So they cannot be trusted with the personal information of many Americans and future military leaders,” Rubio writes.

However, many critics and experts believe the ban is excessive and unfounded. The new US President Joe Biden does not have as strong an aversion to TikTok as his predecessor Donald Trump. Biden withdrew his bans on TikTok and eight other Chinese apps that were issued but never came into force in June 2021.
