In fact, “intelligent systems” have found their way into many areas of everyday life, including law enforcement. We show what lies behind it and explain the opportunities and dangers.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
The term “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) refers to the technology and scientific discipline that includes several approaches and techniques such as machine learning, machine reasoning and robotics.
AI systems are software and hardware systems that use artificial intelligence to act “rationally” in the physical or digital world. Based on perception and analysis of their environment, they act with a certain degree of autonomy to achieve certain goals.
An AI usually “learns” to recognize patterns from data sets (images, texts, spoken language, tables, etc.) with the help of algorithms and statistical models.
Possible applications of AI in everyday life
The possible applications of AI are diverse and range from the automation of business processes (process control, data analysis) to applications in medicine (e.g. support in diagnoses and treatment procedures, image analysis) to the development of autonomous vehicles and robotic systems.
Artificial intelligence is already being used in many areas of everyday life and supports, for example, speech recognition (e.g. digital assistants, translations), word processing (e.g. word suggestions when writing) or creates personalized experiences when using digital media through recommendation systems or through smart household appliances.
Chatbots are increasingly taking on customer service tasks and automatically answer questions about the ordering process, services or products. Search engines have also integrated AI applications into their searches.
AI in crime fighting
In some areas, AI-based applications are also used to help combat crime: in data analysis or evaluation of mass data, the analysis of evidence or the identification of suspects.
Misuse presents society with new challenges
With new possible applications, there are also possibilities for using AI for criminal purposes. Examples include the use of deepfakes to spread fake news and propaganda, to create child pornographic material or to use them fraudulently (writing phishing emails, etc.), which affects both law enforcement authorities and crime prevention as well as society as a whole will face new challenges.
