Can we trust the solutions or statements of an artificial intelligence? And how can we ensure that it acts in our interests and in accordance with our values?
Artificial Intelligence – A Question of Trust?
Moderator Leon Stebe talks about this in the new episode “Artificial Intelligence – A Question of Trust” of the knowledge podcast “Neuland” with Professor Bert Arnrich, head of the Digital Health – Connected Healthcare department at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and Orhan Konak, doctoral student and research assistant at the chair as well as a member of the EU project WideHealth.
Artificial intelligence specializes in pattern recognition and therefore has great potential for healthcare
For example, to detect diseases more quickly and analyze findings. AI is already sometimes superior to doctors in terms of accuracy and speed. “The reason for this is often that these AI systems have been trained with millions of patient data – more than a doctor will ever see in his entire life,” explains Professor Arnrich. However, doctors continue to bear responsibility for the AI's proposed diagnoses. In order to be able to trust the AI's statements in such cases, it is important that doctors can understand how the AI comes to its diagnosis.
“Explainable AI” is the name of this concept, which is intended to make AI – not just in healthcare but in all its areas of application – transparent and comprehensible and therefore trustworthy. “When the system receives an image, for example, it should not only tell us what it recognizes in it, but it should show us which areas of the image were important in making this decision,” says Prof. Arnrich. Making the decision-making process visible helps us check whether we can trust the result.
To raise awareness of why trustworthy AI is important and how it can be made possible, the HPI is hosting a conference from March 14th to 17th. the WideHealth Winter School on Trustworthy AI. Registration for the event, which includes lectures and exercises on the topic of AI and trust, is possible free of charge at https://widehealth.eu/widehealth-winter-school-on-trustworthy-ai/ .
