The age of artificial intelligence has dawned - at least if you look at the articles in technology-savvy portals and channels like this: AI fixes power outages before they are even noticed. AI is used for emotion recognition . AI searches for illegal pools for the French tax authority. AI tracks COVID conspiracy theories . AI beats world's best e-sports drivers . PC game is completely developed by an AI. AI examines ultrasound images for early cancer detection . Multiple AIs working together to animate faces and synthesize voices . AIs paint the last selfie in a destroyed world. TikToker Robot Overloards questions an AI every day about exciting, mostly morbid topics.

The last three examples already show where the trend for popular AI applications was heading in 2022: images. The particular excitement this year, however, is the AI-painted picture “Théâtre D'opéra Spatial” (Space Opera Theater) by Jason Allen. Why? The image was submitted to the California State Fair with the words “Jason Allen via Midjourney.” It promptly took first place in the “Digital Arts/Digitally Manipulated Photography” category and earned Allen $300 in prize money.

Only afterwards did it become clear which digital tool the artist had mainly used: the AI Midjourney , which can independently generate images by entering keywords on Discord. The fact that artificial intelligence spits out images is very simple. However, the fact that these images really correspond to the desired specifications and taste of the “artist” is less so. Allen explained it took many weeks of fine-tuning before Midjourney was able to create the image. Before submitting, he further refined Théâtre D'opéra Spatial

The California State Fair has no problem with the circumstances surrounding the creation of the work: There are currently no rules prohibiting the use of AI software. Allen also gets to keep the prize money. Others are not so tolerant and are already talking about an “end of art”. But as is often the case, every new development, every new tool represents an additional opportunity to express yourself artistically. Video didn't kill the radio star. And artificial intelligence will not displace the fine arts, but rather expand them!
