At first we actually suspected it was a fake, but as more and more photos appeared on social media, our doubts melted away: Edeka is actually temporarily renaming the sandwich ice cream of its own brand “Gut & Günstig”: from “Moscow Art” to “Kiewer Art” . The renamed sandwich ice cream is already available in some branches, as shown by numerous photos on social media, such as here:

Or here:

We were still a little doubtful, because at the moment the ice cream can still be found on the Edeka product page under the name “Moscow Art” (see HERE ). But to several media outlets : They wanted to show solidarity with Ukraine against the Russian invaders.

“We are still very concerned about the events in Ukraine. It is important to us to continue to express our solidarity and we are convinced that this can also be shown with small gestures.”

Edeka spokeswoman Miriam Heimberg

Well-intentioned… but perhaps poorly thought-out?

In addition to praise, there is also criticism from many consumers, and the Greifswald linguist Konstanze Marx also says that she cannot clearly see whether it is just calculation or really a noble gesture of solidarity.

Curiously, there was already an online dispute about this at the beginning of April, but not about Edeka, but about Rewe , as they also have the “Moskauer Art” sandwich ice cream in their range under their “ja!” brand. At that time, however, a renaming was unlikely because the ice cream from the chain's own brand doesn't have much to do with Russia other than the name.

But there is another small problem with the renaming: it doesn't make any sense.
There are many dishes with the addition “Moscow (style)”, and for good reason: their style comes from Russian cuisine. It's no different with the ice cream in the sandwich: It's called "Moscow style" because it's a special recipe for ice cream with a lot of cream.

Changing the name from “Moscow” to “Kiev” may be a gesture of solidarity, but it doesn’t make sense. It is somewhat reminiscent of the stubborn attitude of the USA, renamed “French Fries” to “Freedom Fries” in 2003

The comparison is of course not ideal, but the question is: Does it make sense, out of solidarity with Ukraine, to rename dishes because they have some Russian connection? Is it fair to temporarily attribute a recipe on packaging to Ukraine even though it comes from Russia?

A suggestion, Edeka: During the renaming period, you could donate the sales from the sandwich ice cream to Ukraine. Then it would at least be more than a purely symbolic expression of solidarity.

Also interesting:

Years ago (and now again) a residential area in Italy was given inglorious honor on Google Maps: It is said to be called the “Hitler Quarter” and the houses are shaped like swastikas.
The houses are real, but the name is wrong! – No, this is not a “Hitler Quarter” in Italy!
