German tech startups are worried that the Russian war against Ukraine will increasingly be waged in cyberspace. Around three quarters (73 percent) assume that there is an increased threat to their own startup. 14 percent have already noticed such signs, and a further 59 percent are still expecting them.

Almost a quarter (23 percent) do not expect the war to have any impact on their own cybersecurity. This is the result of a survey by the digital association Bitkom, in which 128 tech startups took part.

“The Russian war against Ukraine has been waged in cyberspace from the beginning. Startups whose business success is based on the use of digital technologies and data must protect themselves particularly effectively” and “Together with cybercrime, which has been increasing for years, every startup should really check its own security precautions and improve them where necessary.”

Bitkom President Achim Berg

So far, almost every fourth startup (23 percent) has taken measures to improve its own IT security due to the war against Ukraine. Another 16 percent have firmly planned this step and 30 percent are still discussing it. Around a quarter of startups (27 percent) also see no need for increased security measures.

Bitkom has put together five measures that every company should urgently tackle now, can be accessed here

Note on methodology: The information is based on a survey that Bitkom Research conducted on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. 128 tech startups were surveyed online. The questions were: “How do you assess the threat to your startup from cyber attacks caused by the war against Ukraine?” and “Have you taken measures to improve IT security in your startup due to the war in Ukraine?”
