The claim
A video is currently circulating that shows a burning train. The images allegedly result from a missile attack by Russia on May 17, 2022 on the Ukrainian railway.
Our conclusion
This claim is false. The burning train was a freight train that derailed in the Rostov region of Russia on May 9, 2013 and therefore caught fire.
Video “Night attacks on the railway in Lviv”
In the video, which in the first second you might think was taken in blinding sunshine, you quickly see clouds of smoke and derailed train carriages. The video is titled “Consequences of night strikes on the railway in the Lviv region.” / “Consequences of the night attacks on the railway in the Lviv region.”
This is being copied unchecked by other accounts on social media ( HERE or HERE ), and the date May 17, 2022 is even assigned to the alleged attack.

Accident at Belaya Kalitva station in Rostov
However, this video is not a rocket attack on the Ukrainian railway, as is currently claimed, but an accident that happened in 2013.
In a YouTube video uploaded in 2017, images from the video currently circulating are attributed to a current date and alleged current events in the Ukraine War:
There are numerous media reports about this incident ( HERE , HERE and HERE ).
On the kommersant.ru , the accident is described as follows:
“On the night of May 9, a 69-car freight train carrying grain, sunflower oil, wood, steel, heating oil, as well as propane, gasoline, methylene chloride and solid sodium hydroxide entered Belaya Kalitva station at double speed. According to the investigative authorities, the train had already derailed in the station and caught fire, which, according to witnesses, was accompanied by an explosion in the tanks. The explosion was so powerful that the windows in the surrounding houses were blown out and the wall of a house on the sixth floor was severely damaged.”
kommersant.ru
Belaya Kalitva is a Russian city in the Rostov region.
Conclusion
The video shows an accident involving a freight train that derailed in Rostov, Russia on May 9, 2013. It caught fire and some tanks exploded.
The location is also incorrect; the accident did not happen in Lviv in the Ukraine, but in Rostov, Russia.
The images in the video have nothing to do with the Ukraine war; they do not show any attack by Russian forces on the Ukrainian railway.
