Sticker “Driving a car? Then you are a nazi!” – The most important thing at the beginning:
- There is currently a sharepic circulating that shows a supposed Extinction Rebellion sticker with the slogan “Driving a car? Then you are a nazi!” shows.
- Extinction Rebellion distances itself from this and other stickers that have appeared in various locations since the beginning of 2020.
- The American fact-checkers at Snopes assume a “smear campaign”.
The sharepic looks like this:
DRIVING A CAR?
YOU ARE A

The fact check
As our colleagues at Snopes report, the sticker does not come from Extinction Rebellion. Apparently it was used as part of a smear campaign against the environmental group.

When contacted by Snopes, an Extinction Rebellion spokesperson said:
This is not an official Extinction Rebellion sticker. Our graphics are available to everyone, so they have clearly been used in a way intended to cause controversy surrounding XR.
This completely contradicts our principles and values: we do not assign blame, we believe in systemic change, not individual change, we do not take a position on certain issues (we prefer to leave it to a citizens' assembly to decide what needs to be done to deal with the emergency) , and we welcome everyone, young and old, rich and poor, meat eaters and vegans, car owners and cyclists - everyone must stand together if we are to avert the calamity that affects us all.

Unfortunately, those responsible for this sticker are not yet known. On January 21, 2020, a thread appeared on the Internet forum 4chan showing a number of fake slogans. On the same day, another thread creator urged users to spread the viral “Nazi” image with the following words:
Extinction Rebellion makes this great slogan. It's so memorable that I think we should help them and spread the word.

Just over a week earlier, a 4chan user had provided a link that leads to an “Extinction Rebellion Poster Generator”. This makes it easy to create messages with the “Extinction Rebellion” brand – without the consent, knowledge or support of the environmental organization.

The Argus reported in January 2020 on similar cases circulating in Brighton, England. Extinction Rebellion also distanced itself from this action and emphasized that “they are in no way associated with racist posters in Brighton or anywhere else and do not want to give these reprehensible messages any further airtime.”
Conclusion:
Since anyone can use Extinction Rebellion's graphics, it is difficult to understand who is really behind this "smear campaign."
The environmental group distances itself from this and similar stickers that have been circulating in various locations since the beginning of the year.
