Autonomous driving: Climate protection is considered the biggest advantage
Three quarters see fundamental advantages of autonomous cars and the majority expect autonomous cars to dominate in 20 years.
The majority of Germans are convinced that autonomous cars on the roads would be better for the climate and the environment.
60 percent say the biggest advantages of self-driving cars are lower environmental impact through lower fuel consumption, 53 percent expect better traffic flow and therefore fewer traffic jams and 49 percent expect lower noise pollution through an adapted driving style.

These are the results of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom among 1,005 people aged 16 and over in Germany.
This is followed by more time for drivers (45 percent) and more driving comfort (39 percent). Security aspects, on the other hand, play a smaller role. 30 percent expect autonomous cars to result in fewer accidents and greater safety for the occupants, while 26 percent expect more safety for other road users.
A quarter (25 percent) expect to arrive at their destination quicker. Only 21 percent say self-driving cars have no advantages. “Autonomous driving will undoubtedly lead to better traffic flow and an adapted driving style and can therefore contribute to climate protection. It is very likely that road safety will also increase.”
Bitkom President Achim Berg

However, the vast majority expect that it will take longer before more autonomous vehicles than conventional vehicles are registered in Germany.
Only 10 percent expect this to happen in ten years, another 25 percent think this will be the case in 15 years. Around a third (34 percent) say it will take another 20 years, 19 percent expect it to happen in 25 years. And 9 percent are convinced that the tide change towards autonomous driving will not occur for 25 years.
“In about 20 years, autonomous cars should at least dominate the statistics of new registrations – that’s what people in Germany expect.”
Bitkom President Achim Berg
42 percent are worried that their personal data could be used by third parties without their knowledge
When it comes to the main disadvantages of autonomous cars, unclear legal frameworks such as liability issues are mentioned most frequently (73 percent). 61 percent fear that autonomous cars could be hacked, 59 percent are afraid of technical problems and just as many fear high investment costs in the infrastructure. Around half (47 percent) think autonomous cars are too expensive, 42 percent have less trust in the technology than humans, especially in dangerous situations, and 42 percent are also worried that their personal data could be used by third parties without their knowledge. 39 percent don't want to miss out on the fun of driving themselves and 23 percent generally have little trust in technology. A tenth (10 percent) see no disadvantages at all to autonomous driving.
Note on methodology: The information is based on a survey that Bitkom Research conducted on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. 1,005 people aged 16 and over in Germany were surveyed by telephone. The survey is representative. The question was: “When do you think more self-driving cars will be registered in Germany per year than conventional cars?”, “What do you think are the biggest advantages of self-driving cars?” and “What do you think speaks against self-driving cars?”
