In Poland, a woman gave birth with a blood alcohol level of 3.2. Your baby with the same alcohol level died.

It is widely known that alcohol during pregnancy is harmful to the child developing in the womb. There is a risk of permanent damage. Now a current case from Poland is causing discussions and has given us a lot of inquiries!

Genetic defects in newborns

On December 23rd, a mother came to the Nowa Dwór Mazowiecky clinic near the Polish capital Warsaw to give birth. According to reports, it was a natural premature birth in the 28th week of pregnancy. The woman was heavily intoxicated; more than 3.2 per mille of alcohol could be detected in her blood.

The baby had suffered genetic defects, presumably a result of the mother's alcohol consumption during her pregnancy. It was brought to Warsaw for medical care and died around three and a half weeks after birth. After the birth, the 44-year-old mother discharged herself from the hospital. However, she is now said to have pleaded guilty. There is a risk of a prison sentence of up to five years. This is reported by the Polish media

Risks of alcohol during pregnancy

The consequences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy include premature births and mental and physical disabilities in children. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FASD), with irreparable damage to the central nervous system, is probably the worst case. According to studies in 2014, 12,000 babies were born with disabilities because their mothers consumed alcohol during pregnancy.

One in four pregnant women in Europe drinks alcohol

Shocking: According to a meta-analysis reported by researchers in the journal “The Lancet Global Health”, one in four pregnant women in Europe drinks alcohol. To achieve this result, almost 400 studies were evaluated by scientists at the Center of Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Canada. Things are looking a little better worldwide, with “only” one in ten pregnant women drinking alcohol.
Any type of alcohol consumption was included in the evaluation.
