Unknown people contacted a woman from Wildenrath via WhatsApp on Saturday (August 27th). The author of the text message stated that he was a bank security employee. There were allegedly irregularities in the Wegberg woman's account because the personal data was accessed via a manipulated card terminal during the last payment by card. Now the woman should confirm the blocking of the last payment using pushTAN on her cell phone, otherwise online access would be blocked until further notice. If there is no response to this message, the online account would also be blocked for security reasons. The woman from Wegberg reacted correctly and did not reveal her TAN number, so there was no damage. Fraudsters use very ingenious methods to get money.

Protect yourself from WhatsApp scams

That's why the police offer the following tips to ensure you don't become a victim of a similar crime:

  • Be suspicious if you receive a WhatsApp message claiming to be a bank security guard. Contact from the bank is not the norm.
  • Check the information and contact your financial institution via another method to find out whether the contact is correct.
  • Do not pass on sensitive data, such as TAN numbers, via messenger services.
  • If you have become a victim of this or a similar fraud, be sure to report it to the police .
